Percentage means out of 100 and is written as %.
10%  means  
To work out 10% of a number, divide by 10.
 
Example 1
Shirt 10% off. Look at the label.
How much does the shirt cost now?
10% of £30 = 30 ÷ 10 = £3.
The price of the shirt is reduced by £3.
£30 - £3 = £27.
The price of the shirt is now £27.
 
Example 2
Jumper 20% off. How much does the jumper cost now?
10% of £20 = 20 ÷ 10 = £2.
40% is four times as much as 10%.
40% of £20 = 2 x 4 = £8.
The price of the jumper is reduced by £8.
The price of the jumper is now £12.
